Vergence Therapy (Eye Teaming Therapy)
Vergence therapy is a specialized part of Vision Therapy that focuses on improving how the two eyes work together (eye teaming). It trains the eyes to move inward (convergence) and outward (divergence) accurately and comfortably, which is essential for clear and single vision—especially during near tasks like reading or screen use.
What is Vergence Dysfunction?
Vergence dysfunction is a condition in which the eyes have difficulty working together in a coordinated way to maintain clear, single vision. Normally, both eyes align precisely on a target to create one unified, three-dimensional image—a process known as binocular vision.
Vergence eye movements are responsible for this alignment:
- Convergence helps the eyes turn inward to focus on near objects
- Divergence allows the eyes to turn outward to focus on distant objects
When this coordination is disrupted, the eyes may struggle to maintain proper alignment, leading to visual discomfort and inefficiency.
Common Symptoms
Individuals with vergence dysfunction may experience:
- Eye strain and fatigue
- Double vision (diplopia)
- Blurred or unstable vision
- Headaches, especially during near work
- Difficulty maintaining focus while reading or using screens
- Reduced attention and visual comfort during prolonged tasks
These symptoms are often more noticeable during activities that require sustained near vision, such as reading, writing, or digital device use.
Causes
Vergence dysfunction can arise due to:
- Imbalance in visual input between the two eyes (sensory issues)
- Poor coordination of the eye muscles (motor control issues)
- Developmental factors
- Neurological conditions affecting visual processing
Diagnosis
A proper diagnosis requires a comprehensive binocular vision assessment, which includes:
- Detailed case history and symptom evaluation
- Testing of eye alignment and coordination
- Assessment of convergence, divergence, and focusing abilities
Treatment
Vergence dysfunction is treatable with the right approach. Management may include:
- Optometric Vision Therapy to improve eye coordination and teaming
- Corrective lenses to address underlying refractive errors
- Prism glasses to support eye alignment when needed
At MVDC, personalized therapy programs are designed to improve binocular vision function, reduce symptoms, and enhance overall visual comfort and performance.
